Rules have changed, miners say; neighbors, environmentalists wary

Mining has a conflicted history in Mason Valley. While it has provided steady work from 1915 to 1978, the land was left with an open scar after mining operations ceased--the massive Yerington pit. It's about a mile long, 800 feet deep and half full of water.

Yerington looks a little rough around the edges. The small city with a population of about 3,000, the Lyon County sister city to Fernley, could be the poster-child town of rural Nevada for the state's ongoing recession, considered the worst in state history.

Wal-Mart Challenged to Live Up to Responsible Mining Claims E-mail

Wal-Mart is not living up to its Love Earth brand of jewelry claims to be sourced from responsibly managed mines, and manufactured in a socially responsible way as reported in .  We are asking Wal-Mart to ensure that the mines they are sourcing from either improve their operations, or that other, more responsible mines are identified.

The Love Earth brand claims to be from sources that are committed to protecting the environment, as well as being socially responsible.   The Love Earth campaign lists Newmont Corporation's Nevada Operations and the Rio Tinto Bingham Canyon mine as sources. The Bingham Canyon mine, located next to Salt Lake City, Utah, is one of the world's largest copper mines, and includes smaller gold mines. The Newmont mines in Nevada include numerous large gold mines such as the Twin Creeks, Leeville, Gold Quarry, Lone Tree, and Phoenix mines.
